Where We Danced (Senior Thesis)

Where We Danced is a Communication Design senior thesis project that explores queer nightlife in New York through the lens of spaces that no longer exist. The project investigates how queer venues functioned as sites of expression, connection, and temporary freedom, and how the experiences within them are often lost over time.

The project takes the form of a broadsheet newspaper, designed using Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator, alongside a series of motion-based posters created in After Effects. The newspaper format operates as both documentation and archive, bringing together photography, written accounts, and visual storytelling to reconstruct these environments and preserve their histories.

The publication centers on four distinct venues: Elks Lodge, Club USA, The Mineshaft, and The Warehouse. Each space represents a different facet of queer nightlife, reflecting the diversity of identities, communities, and experiences that shaped them.

The title Where We Danced speaks to the dance floor as more than a physical space. It was a site of release, performance, and belonging, where individuals could exist more fully and authentically. Though these spaces have disappeared, the memories and impact of what happened within them continue to resonate.
